This course is designed to provide licensees with a thorough understanding of how photovoltaics function as well as common materials that make up photovoltaic cells. Part 1 explains solar radiation basics and the history and current importance of photovoltaic cells. It will explore the structure of crystalline silicon PV cells and the fundamentals of bandgap energy, detail the basics of semi-conductor function, and identify the materials used to make PV cells, in addition to specific processes, advantages, or drawbacks associated with those materials.
