Electrical Energy Storage

This Self-Paced course is designed to provide Professional Engineers with a thorough understanding of the basic concepts of energy storage, including the historical and current uses of stored energy and the increasing demand for stored electrical energy, energy challenges, storage in the power grid, and the benefits and cost drivers of electrical energy storage. This course will review the qualities of an ideal electrical energy storage system, and pinpoint how the research areas are intended to provide insight and enhancement on a systems level, impacting the entire electrochemical system rather than a specific element. The research directed at enhancing battery performance through the exploration and use of novel materials, and enhancing energy storage through the exploration and improvement of interfaces for batteries and supercapacitors will be discussed. This course will highlight the Basic Energy Sciences Advisory Committee’s effort to support fundamental research and provide direction in implementing alternate energy technologies. (This is a Self-Paced Course.)
